“We lose our souls if we lose the experience of the forest, the butterflies, the song of the birds,

if we can’t see the stars at night.”

— Thomas Berry

Our Mission

The mission of Nantucket Lights is to preserve and protect Nantucket's nighttime environment and heritage of dark skies by raising awareness about light pollution on the island and advocating for environmentally responsible outdoor lighting.

What We Do

  • Advocate for the protection of the night sky

  • Educate the public and policymakers about night sky conservation

  • Promote environmentally responsible outdoor lighting

  • Pursue the designation of Nantucket as a "Dark Sky Community" by DarkSky International (formerly known as the International Dark Sky Association) as part of its International Dark Sky Places Program.

We are concerned citizens who live on or regularly visit Nantucket and who are passionate about wanting to preserve its beautiful dark skies. We share the goal of minimizing the light pollution, energy waste, and environmental disruption that results from poor outdoor lighting. We are incorporated as Nantucket Lights, Inc., a 501(c)(3) Massachusetts nonprofit corporation that is responsible for all aspects of our financial management.
